Hoist & Winch Drive

Motor, Gearbox & Brake Selection

Hoist and winch drives are intermittent duty with high peak torque, frequent reversals and a safety brake that has to hold the load without exception. The motor is rated on the duty cycle, and the brake on the worst-case load.

Send us the load, speed, duty cycle and safety requirements. We select the motor, gearbox, drive and brakes, and quote them as one package with the duty class stated.

What we need from you to select this drive

The more of this you send, the faster and more accurate the selection. If you only have part of it, send what you have — we will tell you what is still missing.

How we select it

  1. 1

Establish the load diagram across the full cycle and the resulting RMS power.

  2. 2

Select the motor against the duty class and the cyclic duration factor, with the thermal margin stated.

  3. 3

Match the ratio to the drum speed and confirm the output torque and brake torque rating.

  4. 4

Select the drive for the four-quadrant operation and confirm the braking and energy handling.

  5. 5

Specify the service and safety brakes, then quote the package with the duty class stated.

Selection points that decide the outcome

Rate on the duty cycle, not on the peak

Intermittent duty is rated on RMS power over the cycle, but the peak torque and the thermal margin still have to be checked. Both matter.

Four-quadrant operation

Lowering a load regenerates energy. The drive has to handle regeneration, with a braking resistor or a regenerative front end specified.

Safety brake rating

The safety brake is rated for the worst-case load and must hold independently of the motor and drive. State the holding torque requirement separately.

Drum and rope matching

Rope diameter, drum diameter and the fleet angle determine the mechanical design. Confirm them before the gearbox is finalised.

Emergency stop behaviour

A controlled emergency stop is not the same as a brake drop. Define the required stopping distance and the emergency stop category.

An indicative package

An example of how a selection comes together. Your figures will differ — this is to show the level of detail we return with a quotation, not a fixed configuration.

Other Brands Available on Request

Beyond the brands shown here, we also source and supply spare units and parts for most international and Chinese industrial brands. Not sure what you have? Send us a photo of the nameplate — we will identify the unit and quote the original part.

Why work with us

  • We select the whole drive train — motor, gear unit, coupling, starter and brake — as one matched package.
  • You send the duty data; we return the ratings, service factors and alternatives in writing.
  • We supply Siemens, Innomotics, Flender, ABB, WEG and B&R, so selection follows your duty, not one catalogue.
  • Spare parts and replacements for the same units are available afterwards.

Answers before you ask

Frequently asked questions

How should a hoist motor be rated?

On the RMS power across the full duty cycle, with the peak torque and thermal margin checked separately. Send us the cycle and we will state the duty class and the rating in the quotation.

Do you supply the safety brake with the drive package?

Yes. We supply the service brake and the independent safety brake rated for the worst-case load, together with the motor, gearbox and drive.

Do you only supply the eight brands shown on your homepage?

No. We source and supply spare units and parts for most international and Chinese industrial brands, not only the eight brands shown on this site.

I do not know the exact model number. Can you still quote?

Yes. Send us a photo of the nameplate and we will identify the exact unit before preparing the quotation for the original part.

Do you supply genuine original manufacturer parts?

Yes. We supply genuine original manufacturer parts. Send us a photo of the nameplate and we can identify the exact unit before quoting, so you do not need to look up a model number.

Do you provide installation guidance, commissioning and after-sales support?

Yes. We provide installation guidance, commissioning support and after-sales support, remotely or on site depending on your project.

What is the delivery time?

Lead time depends on the product and configuration. We confirm the delivery schedule together with the quotation, so you have a firm date before you order.

Which export documents and certificates can you provide?

We can provide applicable CE and ISO documentation, certificates of origin, packing lists and test reports according to the requirements of your destination country.

What payment terms and incoterms do you work with?

We accept T/T and L/C payment, and quote FOB, CIF or EXW terms to suit your project.
